NNPC Calls on Kannywood to Champion Protection of National Assets

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has urged Kannywood actors and other industry professionals to leverage their influence to advocate for the protection of Nigeria’s critical national assets, particularly those managed by NNPC Ltd.

Speaking at a workshop with selected Kannywood actors in Abuja on Tuesday, Olufemi Soneye, NNPC Ltd’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, highlighted the pivotal role the entertainment industry plays in shaping public opinion. He emphasized that the vandalism of critical infrastructure, such as oil and gas pipelines, power plants, and energy installations, poses a significant threat to Nigeria’s economy, national security, and overall development.

“You are not just actors; you are powerful influencers whose voices shape public opinion. That is why I am calling on you today to use your platforms to advocate for the protection of our national assets, especially those managed by NNPC Ltd,” Mr. Soneye stated.

He stressed the importance of educating the public about the dangers of vandalism, noting that such acts could have devastating consequences for the nation. “As respected figures in society, you have the influence to drive this message home. We must all play our part in safeguarding these assets,” he added.

Mr. Soneye underscored NNPC Ltd’s critical role in Nigeria’s energy security, highlighting its contributions to the national grid. He mentioned key facilities such as the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant, a wholly owned NNPC facility providing essential electricity to the region, as well as co-owned power plants like Afam VI and Okpai 1 & 2, which have a combined installed capacity of 1,132 megawatts.

“These facilities are vital to ensuring a stable electricity supply for homes, industries, and businesses across the country. Imagine the impact if these assets were damaged or destroyed by vandals—entire communities would be plunged into darkness, businesses would suffer, and the economy would face severe setbacks,” he explained.

Mr. Soneye called for a collective effort to protect national assets, urging Kannywood actors to amplify the message: *“Safeguarding our national assets is safeguarding our future.”* He reiterated NNPC Ltd’s commitment to driving Nigeria’s energy sustainability and economic growth but emphasized that the company cannot achieve this alone.

“We need your partnership in raising awareness and fostering a culture of responsibility and patriotism among Nigerians,” he said.

He also praised the efforts of NNPC Ltd’s management under the leadership of Group Chief Executive Officer Mele Kyari, noting that strategic actions have significantly enhanced the security of national assets, delivering unprecedented results in the sector. These achievements, he said, have been made possible through the leadership and support of President Bola Tinubu, as well as the dedication of the Chief of Defence Staff, the military, and law enforcement agencies.

“Together, let us protect what belongs to us all,” Mr. Soneye concluded, issuing a call to action for all stakeholders to unite in safeguarding Nigeria’s critical infrastructure.
