The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced plans to reach over 484,000 vulnerable individuals in Borno state with essential drugs and nutrition commodities during the lean season.
Dr. Walter Mulombo, WHO Country Representative, made this announcement on Tuesday in Maiduguri while donating crucial medical and nutrition supplies to the Borno State Government.
He mentioned that 3,200 children under the age of five, suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) and medical complications, will also receive these kits at stabilization centers in the state.
Represented by Dr. Ann Fortin, team lead for World Health Emergency, Mulombo explained that the services will focus on populations in security-compromised areas with limited access to healthcare facilities.
“The current donation aims to reach over 484,740 vulnerable individuals, particularly those in security-compromised areas with limited access to healthcare services. Additionally, over 3,200 children under five with SAM and medical complications will receive high-quality treatment using these SAM kits,” he stated.
Mulombo also highlighted that in 2023, WHO supported the state government in reaching over 1.6 million vulnerable individuals, including children aged 0-59 months, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and adolescent girls, with critical interventions.
According to Daily Trust, the donated items include life-saving medicines, nutritional supplements, and medical supplies for treating and preventing malnutrition and common childhood illnesses.
