Pioneering Nollywood producer, screenwriter, and director Emem Isong-Misode has joined the ranks of Nigerian celebrities with doctorate degrees.

The award-winning producer of films such as “The Breaking Point,” “Reloaded,” “Private Sin,” and “She Devil,” recently earned a doctorate degree in Film and Media Arts from the University of the Creative Arts in the United Kingdom.

The four-year program involved extensive research on how hybridity emerged in the process of constructing identity in Nigerian Nollywood cinema. Emem, who relocated to the United States a few years ago, drew on her over 25 years of experience as a Nigerian filmmaker for her study.

Celebrating her new status on Instagram, Emem wrote, “It has been a full circle of this doctoral research at the University of the Creative Arts, to which I am grateful for supporting me on this journey. 2020 to 2024 – four years of gruelling study. And now, two hours after a comprehensive presentation, feedback, and recommendations, I humbly present to you, Dr. Emem Isong Misodi (PhD).”

Emem is currently preparing for the second edition of her annual film festival, the African Cultural Film Festival (AFFRICUFF). The event will be held in Houston, United States, from October 26 to 29, with the theme “Cultural Resilience: Strength in Diversity.” The maiden edition of the film festival last year was a huge success.
