President Tinubu Orders Crackdown on Display of Russian Flags |
On Monday, President Bola Tinubu directed security agencies to take action against individuals displaying the Russian flag within the country.
General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, conveyed this directive while briefing State House correspondents following a National Security Council meeting.
He explained that the service chiefs had updated the President on the current security situation in Nigeria, highlighting that the briefing was prompted by ongoing nationwide protests that have turned violent in some states.
"Initially, the protests were described as peaceful, but it has become evident that some individuals are exploiting the situation to cause chaos. We have witnessed significant looting, theft, and other criminal activities," he said.
General Musa expressed concern over the appearance of foreign flags within Nigeria's borders, deeming it unacceptable.
"We are issuing a clear warning, as directed by the President, that flying any foreign flag in Nigeria is a treasonable offense and will be treated as such. No one should allow themselves to be manipulated by others," he stated.
He noted that those displaying foreign flags were primarily young people being influenced by others.
"We are investigating those behind this and will take serious action against them. The President has made it clear that we will not tolerate any attempts to disrupt the peace and stability of Nigeria," he added.
General Musa affirmed that all security agencies are prepared to defend democracy and the nation's sovereignty.
"We will not permit any actions aimed at changing the government. Democracy is our commitment, and we will continue to uphold it," he emphasized.
He reiterated that the military would intervene if the protests escalated beyond control.
"Some subversive elements are encouraging individuals to carry Russian flags in Nigeria, which crosses a red line. We will not accept this," he warned.
In a national broadcast on Sunday, President Tinubu urged the organizers of the nationwide protests to suspend their actions, citing the violence and loss of lives in some states.
He also cautioned that he would not tolerate any attempts by opposition politicians to undermine democracy in the country.
The meeting was attended by all service chiefs, Vice President Kashim Shetima, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, among others. (NAN)
