Polish Students Arrested for Displaying Russian Flags Released |
A group of Polish students detained in Nigeria have been released, according to the Polish foreign ministry on Wednesday.
Earlier this month, Nigerian authorities arrested seven Polish nationals for allegedly raising Russian flags during anti-government protests in Kano, a northern state.
A spokesperson for the Polish foreign ministry refuted the claim that the students were waving the flags, stating they were merely in the vicinity of the protest.
“The Polish students have been released and are in Kano,” the ministry announced on social media platform X. “Thank you to everyone involved in securing their release!”
The students were in Kano as part of a program to study the Hausa language.
On August 1, hundreds of thousands of Nigerians began hunger protests against President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, which have led to the partial removal of fuel and electricity subsidies, currency devaluation, and inflation reaching three-decade highs.
During these protests in northern states, some demonstrators waved Russian flags, highlighting concerns about increased Russian influence in West Africa.
