NiMet Forecasts Three Days of Thunderstorms and Rain Starting Sunday |
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted thunderstorms and rain across the country from Sunday to Tuesday.
According to NiMet's weather outlook released on Saturday, thunderstorms are expected in parts of Borno, Jigawa, Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi, and Gombe States in the northern region on Sunday morning. The agency predicts that thunderstorms will continue in most parts of the region during the afternoon and evening.
In the North Central region, thunderstorms with rain are anticipated in the Federal Capital Territory, Benue, Nasarawa, and Plateau States during the morning hours. Later in the day, the entire region is expected to experience thunderstorms with rain. Southern cities will have cloudy skies in the morning, with intermittent rain expected later in the day.
On Monday, morning thunderstorms are expected in parts of Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba, Adamawa, Yobe, and Jigawa States, with continued thunderstorms in the northern region later in the day. NiMet also predicts morning thunderstorms with rain in the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi, Niger, and Kwara States, with thunderstorms expected in the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, and Niger States later in the day. Cloudy skies are anticipated over southern states, with intermittent rain during the afternoon and evening.
For Tuesday, morning thunderstorms are forecasted in parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Kaduna States in the northern region. Cloudy skies are expected over the entire region later in the day. In the North Central region, thunderstorms with rain are anticipated in parts of Niger and Kwara States during the morning, with thunderstorms expected in Kogi, the Federal Capital Territory, and Benue States during the afternoon and evening. Intermittent rain is expected throughout the day in the southern region.
NiMet has advised residents to avoid flood-prone areas due to the high likelihood of urban flooding caused by heavy downpours. Strong winds may precede rains in areas where thunderstorms are likely. The agency also urged the public to follow safety advisories from relevant authorities and stay updated through NiMet's website (www.nimet.gov.ng).
Airline operators are advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective planning of their operations.
