| Nigeria's Security Crisis Overwhelming, Says Lawmaker |
Sulaiman Gumi, a federal lawmaker from Zamfara State, has commended Ahmed Abubakar, the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), for his resignation, calling it the ‘honourable’ choice. Gumi, who represents the Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency, acknowledged the severe state of insecurity in Nigeria.
In an interview with PUNCH Online at the 2024 Humanitarian Award Night in Abuja on Saturday, Gumi discussed Abubakar's resignation. Appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018, Abubakar stepped down citing ‘personal and family issues.’
Gumi speculated that Abubakar might have been overwhelmed by the persistent security challenges facing the country. He praised Abubakar for choosing to resign rather than cling to power amidst a failing system, a move he described as honourable.
"I believe the issue of insecurity is overwhelming for anyone. If the NIA DG resigned due to the overwhelming situation or his inability to manage it, he did the right thing. It's honourable to step aside for someone more capable. This is something Nigerians rarely do," Gumi stated.
He emphasized that holding onto a position without performing effectively is unnecessary. "Others should be given the chance to address the situation. Abubakar's resignation is a commendable act that Nigerians should emulate," he added.
Gumi also expressed his belief that the government and security agencies could resolve the insecurity if they had the will to do so. He criticized the lack of commitment from both the government and law enforcement agencies, questioning why known bandit locations have not been targeted.
Additionally, Gumi highlighted the growing humanitarian crisis caused by displacement due to violence. He urged Nigerians to support the federal government in providing temporary camps and aid to those affected.
"Nigeria is facing a significant humanitarian crisis. The government alone cannot address it. Everyone needs to contribute to alleviating the suffering. Temporary humanitarian camps should be established to house displaced individuals instead of leaving them in schools or shanties," Gumi said.
Emmanuel Anabueze, the convener of the annual Humanitarian Award Night, echoed Gumi's sentiments. He stressed that politicizing policies, projects, and aid would only prolong the suffering of grassroots communities.
