As Nigeria joins the global community to celebrate the 2024 International Youth Day (IYD), the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has praised Nigerian youth for their contributions to the economy. He assured that new laws and policies would be enacted to enhance digital transformation and bridge the digital divide.
IYD is observed annually on August 12 to recognize the contributions of youth to societal development and to address the challenges they face. This year’s theme is: ‘From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development’.
In a statement on Sunday, Kalu’s Special Assistant on Press Affairs, Udora Orizu, highlighted the crucial role Nigerian youth play in driving economic growth and development.
Kalu noted that youth are the largest demographic of users and developers shaping digital trends globally, making them essential in leveraging technology to tackle global challenges.
He emphasized that this year’s theme aligns with the 10th House of Representatives' agenda to use legislative tools to empower Nigerian youth in the digital market.
According to Kalu, the 10th House recognizes the importance of innovation and technology in enhancing Nigeria’s global competitiveness. Therefore, they plan to introduce a national innovation strategy to prioritize digital transformation and promote digital skills development programs.
The Deputy Speaker also mentioned that the parliament is aware of the nation's current state. He recalled how the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, recently led the House to engage with youth leaders at the National Assembly to listen to their concerns and find lasting solutions.
Kalu urged the youth to promote national unity and collective prosperity by utilizing various government initiatives, programs, and policies. He added that President Bola Tinubu's administration is working diligently to address their challenges.
