The website of GTBank, a prominent Nigerian financial institution, was hacked on Wednesday night, rendering the site inaccessible. Customers took to social media to express their frustration.

Attempts to access www.gtbbank.com resulted in error messages as of 10:30 PM on Wednesday.

The incident occurred shortly after the domain name was renewed for another five years, from August 13, 2024, to March 21, 2029, according to domain analysis platforms.

A cybersecurity expert familiar with the Nigerian banking sector suggested that the bank’s login credentials might have been compromised, rather than the domain address being stolen for resale.

As of the time of this report, the bank had not issued an official response to the situation.
