Flood Devastates Cemetery in Kaduna Community |
Residents of the Chikaji community in Sabongari Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State are urging the state government to implement proper channelization measures for their area. This plea comes after a severe flood, triggered by heavy rainfall, swept through the community from early Monday morning until midafternoon.
The flood's impact was most severe along the water canal stretching from Yan-awaki by Kano roundabout to Chikaji and down to Shika Dam in Sabon Gari.
In an interview with reporters, the village head of Chikaji, Alhaji Auwal Sani-Danbaba, reported that the flood affected over 200 houses in the area.
"It also washed away parts of the LEA Primary School and a significant portion of the Hayin Ojo Cemetery," he said. "Currently, many graves have been left exposed, and some flood victims are being sheltered by neighbors. Fortunately, there were no fatalities during the incident."
Danbaba expressed disappointment over the lack of assistance from the government or any agencies. He emphasized the urgent need for intervention by relevant government bodies responsible for disaster management and control.
Suleiman Liman, Chief Imam of Chikaji Central Mosque, also commented on the situation. He mentioned that the community had called an emergency meeting of affluent individuals in the area to address the challenges at the cemetery and to assist the flood victims.
One flood victim recounted their experience, saying, "While we were trying to evacuate water from the house, a section collapsed, and we couldn't save anything. My main concern was to protect and rescue the children from the rubble."
The victim appealed for support and swift intervention from the government and key stakeholders.
Daily Trust learned that many victims are currently staying with relatives or residents who were less affected, while some married women have returned to their parents' homes until the situation stabilizes.
