The World Bank has appointed Dr. Ndiamé Diop as the new Country Director for Nigeria, effective immediately. He succeeds Shubham Chaudhuri, who has completed his term in the role.

In a statement, the World Bank announced: “Dr. Ndiamé Diop, the newly appointed Country Director for Nigeria, has assumed his new position today. He succeeds Shubham Chaudhuri, who completed his term in the same capacity.”

Before his assignment to Abuja, Dr. Diop served as the World Bank Country Director for Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand, based in Manila. During his tenure, he significantly increased the Bank’s financing to the Philippines, supporting key economic reforms and efforts to address disparities in sectors such as nutrition, healthcare, social protection, education, agriculture, and digital connectivity.

Dr. Diop expressed his enthusiasm for his new role, stating, “I am thrilled to lead the World Bank’s program in Nigeria, especially at this critical time when the country has a significant opportunity to advance its economy and improve development outcomes for its citizens. I look forward to strengthening our partnership with the Nigerian government at both the federal and state levels by providing quality technical and financial support to accelerate progress on Nigeria’s development priorities.”

He added, “Nigeria is a dynamic and vibrant country that plays a crucial role in the entire sub-region. The World Bank Group is committed to working with the government, development partners, and citizens to create a thriving economy where jobs and economic opportunities are abundant, lifting millions of Nigerians out of poverty.”

In his new position, Dr. Diop will lead the World Bank’s team in Nigeria, enhancing policy dialogue and collaboration with the government and key stakeholders. He will oversee the delivery and implementation of both lending and non-lending support to Nigeria.
