Thugs and Residents Clash in Rano Over Sanusi’s Emissary

On Tuesday, suspected thugs and local residents clashed at the former emir’s palace in Rano Local Government Area of Kano State. The conflict escalated into significant chaos, forcing the interim chairman of the local government council, Professor Dahiru Yakubu Rano, and the representative of the reinstated 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, to flee.

Naziru Salisu Mato, a resident and eyewitness whose motorcycle was destroyed during the crisis, reported that thugs had been present at the palace for several days, causing tension and insecurity, which the residents found unacceptable.

“The thugs arrived a few days ago and took over the palace security, but we disagreed with this because the palace already had its own security. Things turned violent today when the interim chairman arrived with the Emir’s representative, attempting to escort him to the palace. The residents tried to prevent this, leading to the thugs attacking people and chasing them away. Eventually, the residents gathered courage and took to the streets, pursuing the thugs, the chairman, and the representative. They managed to chase them away, but some thugs had hidden and attacked again when things seemed calm. I was chased while riding my motorcycle, which was destroyed with a machete,” Mato recounted.

It was also reported that many vehicles were damaged, particularly at the LGA secretariat.

According to Daily Trust, residents under the banner of the Concerned Citizens of Rano Emirate had raised concerns about armed hoodlums occupying the emirate’s headquarters since Sunday.

In a letter to the state police commissioner, the residents stated that unidentified individuals had stationed hoodlums at the emir’s palace, posing a threat to the security of life and property.
