TCN Announces Full Restoration of National Grid After Partial Collapse |
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed that the national grid was fully restored at approximately 9:57 p.m. on Saturday following a partial collapse earlier in the day.
In a statement released in Abuja on Sunday, Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, reported that the grid experienced a partial disturbance around 3:09 p.m. on Saturday.
Mbah explained that restoration efforts began immediately after the incident. "By about 9:57 p.m. on Saturday, the affected portion of the grid was successfully restored," she noted.
This incident marks the third partial grid disturbance, alongside one total disturbance, in 2024. The disturbance is believed to have been caused by the unexpected tripping of three units at a power generating station, which abruptly removed 313 Megawatts from the grid, leading to system instability and a loss of bulk supply to a section of the national grid.
Mbah highlighted that the system operator responded to the sudden drop in generation, which caused a frequency dip, by isolating a section of the grid. This included the Ibom Power Station, allowing the company to continue supplying power to Uyo, Aba, Itu, Eket, Calabar, and other areas, even as the rest of the grid remained without supply.
