England manager Gareth Southgate has attributed his team's defeat in the Euro 2024 final to Spain to their inability to maintain possession.

The Three Lions aimed to improve on their previous performance but fell 2-1 to La Roja on Sunday.

Nico Williams scored the opening goal in the second half, with Cole Palmer equalizing after coming off the bench. However, Mikel Oyarzabal secured the win for Spain before the final whistle.

“We competed until the very end, but today we didn’t keep possession of the ball well enough,” Southgate told the BBC.

“Especially when we defended well, they pressed us really effectively, and we couldn’t break out of that pressure. That allowed them to control the game more, which can wear you down.

“Even so, we were still in the game when we equalized, and it was wide open.

“As always in these matches, it comes down to fine margins – but they were the best team in the tournament. Overall, they deserved it.”
