The National President of the National Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Aminu Mu’azu Maifata, has urged Nigerians not to participate in the planned nationwide protest over the current economic challenges.

According to Daily Trust, some groups are organizing nationwide protests scheduled for August 1 to August 10, 2024.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Friday, Maifata appealed to Nigerians to be patient with the administration of President Bola Tinubu, noting that economic policies are beginning to show positive results.

“These programs and schemes have short, medium, and long-term impacts, and we have started implementing them at the local level to bring relief to our people,” he said.

“I urge Nigerians to contribute positively to the growth and development of the country, as protests will only take us back to those dark days.”

He added that with the recent Supreme Court judgment on full local government autonomy, many of the challenges facing the country, especially at the grassroots level, will be addressed soon.

“Although protest is a constitutional right, violent protests have historically been detrimental to the economy. That is why I am calling on Nigerians to avoid the planned protest and support the current government as social investment programs are being rolled out,” Maifata concluded.
