The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has acknowledged the widespread hunger in the country but urged Nigerians to give the government more time to address the situation.
Speaking on Channels TV's Sunday Politics, Tunji-Ojo emphasized that one year is too short to evaluate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration.
“Mr. President, to the best of my knowledge, never campaigned as a magician; he campaigned as a statesman. He campaigned on the basis of renewed hope. When you want to reprocess a system that has been down, you need a bit of time,” he stated.
He highlighted that the President has already taken significant steps to lay a solid foundation for the country's economic stability and growth.
Acknowledging the current hardships, the minister claimed that the President has a comprehensive plan to stabilize the economy and improve the quality of life for Nigerians.
He praised Tinubu for focusing on long-term benefits rather than short-term fixes that would not solve the underlying economic issues.
Some groups are planning a nationwide protest from August 1 to August 10 due to the ongoing hardships.
However, Tunji-Ojo expressed disappointment that the organizers of the planned protest did not engage with the government before deciding to take to the streets.
He assured that Tinubu is willing to engage with Nigerians regarding his policies and plans for the country, and that the benefits of the President’s bold decisions will soon become evident.
