The Sultanate has finally addressed the proposed amendment to the Sokoto State Local Government Law of 2008.
During the opening of the public hearing on the amendment, Dr. Muhammad Jabbi Kilgori, the Sa’in Kilgori, clarified that the amendment would not diminish the Sultan's powers or functions.
He emphasized that, contrary to rumors, there is no conflict between the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, and the governor, Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu.
Kilgori, who also serves as the district head of Kilgori and a council member of the Sultanate, noted that some adversaries are attempting to create discord between the Sultanate and the state government.
“There is no issue between the Sultan and Governor Ahmed Aliyu at all. The Sultanate is prepared to operate under any law enacted through due process. We have functioned under various laws in the past and are ready to adapt to the new law.
“The Sultanate has operated under the current law for 16 years. We are prepared to collaborate with the government,” he stated.
According to Daily Trust, the proposed amendment to the Sokoto State Local Government Law of 2008 has sparked controversy both within and outside the state, with some suggesting that the amendment targets the Sultan.
If passed, the amendment would grant the governor the sole authority to appoint district and village heads, while the Sultan's role would be limited to recommending candidates for these positions.
