NNPC Ltd. Plans 3 LNG Stations, 100 CNG Sites Nationwide |
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC Ltd.) has announced that its initiative to bring Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) closer to Nigerians is now underway and irreversible.
Malam Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., stated that alongside the extensive deployment of CNG stations nationwide, the company and its partners will also establish three Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) stations in Ajaokuta.
Kyari made this announcement on Thursday during the simultaneous commissioning of 12 CNG stations in Abuja and Lagos by Mr. Ekperikpe Ekpo, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas).
“There is no turning back on delivering CNG for all Nigerians. It is the right thing to do. Is it overdue? Yes, but we will make progress.
“We will bridge the gap to ensure that the volatility seen with Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) does not affect gas,” Kyari said.
He praised President Bola Tinubu for providing the necessary support to drive domestic gas utilization, aimed at delivering cleaner and more affordable energy sources to Nigerians.
In his remarks, the Managing Director of NNPC Retail Limited, Mr. Huub Stokman, mentioned that NNPC Retail plans to establish over 100 CNG sites, including 16 NNPC Gas Marketing and NIPCO Gas JV sites within the next year.
“CNG offers Nigeria an affordable alternative to existing fuel products. It will be about 40 percent cheaper than petrol in Nigeria, and with continued investments, it will become a significant part of our energy mix,” Stokman added.
The Chairman of the NNPC Board of Directors, Chief Pius Akinyelure, noted that increased CNG adoption would bring economic benefits by reducing fuel costs for both consumers and businesses.
NNPC Ltd. has taken the lead in deploying Auto-CNG Stations across Nigeria following the removal of fuel subsidies and the declaration of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiatives.
NNPC Gas Marketing Limited, a subsidiary of NNPC Ltd., in partnership with NIPCO Gas Limited, has already developed an Auto-CNG rollout plan for the construction of 35 CNG stations nationwide. (NAN)
