Malnutrition: Over 2 Million Children Suffer from Stunting in Kano – UNICEF |
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has revealed that out of over 3.4 million children under the age of five in Kano, 2 million, or 56.9%, are affected by stunting due to malnutrition.
This information was disclosed by Mr. Rahama Rihood Mohammed, UNICEF Chief of Field Office in Kano, during the launch of the 2024 First Round of Maternal Neonatal Child Health (MNCH) Week at Ungwa Uku Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) in Tarauni Local Government Area.
According to him, Kano State, with a projected population of about 17 million, has over 3.4 million children under five years old, with more than half suffering from stunting.
In his address, Dr. Ashiru Hamza Muhammed, Team Lead for Alive and Thrive in Kano, stated that his organization has been supporting the Kano State Government, particularly in nutrition and micronutrient supplementation.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf highlighted that his administration has been actively working to improve health services across the state. He emphasized the state's strong commitment to nutrition promotion programs and its efforts to provide affordable and accessible healthcare services to all 44 local government areas.
