| Kano Sets November 30 for Local Government Council Elections |
The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission has scheduled November 30, 2024, for the local government council elections.
This decision follows a Supreme Court judgment that granted local government autonomy and mandated states to have substantive local government chairmen, as reported by Daily Trust.
Recently, the Kano State Government expressed its readiness to conduct the elections soon.
During a press briefing on Wednesday in Kano, the commission's chairman, Professor Sani Lawal Malumfashi, confirmed the commission's preparedness for the elections.
Malumfashi also mentioned that all candidates would undergo drug tests before being cleared to participate in the elections.
According to the chairman, party primaries and the submission of candidates' particulars will take place from September 6 to October 18.
The commission will announce the names of qualified candidates on October 25.
Political parties have until November 1 to substitute or change their candidates.
The last local government elections in the state were held on January 16, 2021, across 44 local government areas and 484 wards.
Currently, the 44 LGAs are managed by interim Caretaker Committee Chairmen overseeing council activities.
The commission also stated that posting posters on public buildings, palaces, and places of worship is prohibited, and violators will be disqualified.
