| Kano Emirship Dispute: Court Adjourns Hearing to July 4 |
A Kano State High Court has scheduled July 4 for the hearing of applications in the ongoing emirship dispute involving the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado-Bayero.
The applicants, including the Attorney General of Kano, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, and the Kano State House of Assembly, represented by their counsel, Ibrahim Isah-Wangida Esq, filed a motion ex parte on May 27, 2024.
They are seeking an order to restrain Aminu Ado-Bayero and four other dethroned emirs of Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye from presenting themselves as emirs.
The respondents include: Alhaji Aminu Ado-Bayero (Emir of Kano), Alhaji Nasiru Ado-Bayero (Emir of Bichi), Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar II (Emir of Karaye), Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad-Inuwa (Emir of Rano), and Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim-Gaya (Emir of Gaya).
Additional respondents are the Inspector-General of Police, the Director of the State Security Service, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Nigerian Army.
During the hearing on Tuesday, Counsel for the applicants, Eyitayo Fatogun, SAN, informed the court that they received five processes from the respondents on July 1 at approximately 6:30 PM.
“My lord, we received the respondents' five processes yesterday evening and have filed all our responses,” the lawyer stated.
He requested the court to stand down the matter to allow them to serve their responses to the respondents.
Counsel for Aminu Ado-Bayero, Abdul Muhammed, opposed the request and sought an adjournment to allow them to reply and file all their applications.
Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu adjourned the matter until July 4, 2024, for the hearing of all pending applications and the originating motion.
It is worth noting that on May 27, the court granted an interim injunction order restraining the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th respondents, their servants, and privies from presenting themselves as Emirs to maintain peace in Kano.
According to Daily Trust, the State House of Assembly passed the Kano Emirates Council Repeal Bill 2024 on May 23, which was immediately signed into law by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, dissolving all four Emirate councils created by former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in 2019.
