The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has stated that the federal government cannot solely finance education in Nigeria.
He made this remark at an event in Abuja honoring Dr. Emeka Offor and his wife, Dr. Adaora Offor, who received honorary degrees in business administration and social advocacy from the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) and Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, respectively.
The minister acknowledged the government's significant investment in education but emphasized the need for private individuals and philanthropists to follow the example set by Mr. Offor and his wife through their foundation.
He said, “The ministry is encouraged by this recognition because the government cannot finance education alone, despite its substantial contributions.
“That is why the efforts of individuals like Emeka Offor and his wife are crucial, and their actions should inspire others. This is an excellent example of well-utilized resources, and I urge others to follow their lead.”
UNN received N100 million for research activities and scholarly endeavors benefiting the Faculty of Business Administration, while NAU received N50 million for the welfare of widows, children with special needs, and other vulnerable members of society.
Chief Offor, the celebrant and donor, explained that the endowment fund would be restricted, with the principal sum held in perpetuity unless otherwise decided by the Sir Emeka Offor Foundation (SEOF) and the universities.
He said, “This gesture reflects our commitment to supporting higher education in Nigeria and strengthening the bond between SEOF and UNN/NAU.”
