Euro 2024: I Hit Rock Bottom When Portugal Needed Me Most – Cristiano Ronaldo |
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has admitted that he was at his lowest point when his team needed him the most.
Ronaldo made these remarks following Portugal’s Euro 2024 Round of 16 victory over Slovenia on Monday.
His penalty was saved in extra time, leaving the last-16 match goalless.
However, just 15 minutes later, the Al-Nassr forward returned to the spot to successfully convert the first of Portugal’s shootout kicks.
Goalkeeper Diogo Costa then made Euros history by saving three penalties in the shootout, securing Portugal’s place in the quarter-finals.
Speaking after the match, Ronaldo said: “Even the strongest people have their bad days. I was at rock bottom when the team needed me the most.
“Sadness at the start turns into joy at the end. That’s what football is all about. Moments, inexplicable moments. I feel both sad and happy at the same time.
“But the important thing is to enjoy it. The team did an extraordinary job. We fought until the very end and I think we deserved it because we played with more authority.”
