France's captain, Kylian Mbappe, has shed light on why Portugal's star, Joao Felix, missed his penalty during the shootout in the quarter-final at Volksparkstadion in Hamburg on Friday.
Les Bleus advanced to the semi-finals of the tournament, winning the penalty shootout after a 120-minute goalless draw.
Both teams successfully converted their spot-kicks, except for Joao Felix, who missed Portugal’s third attempt.
Mbappe offered an unusual explanation for Felix's miss, suggesting that the French goalkeeper was an intimidating presence for the player:
“He’s intimidating. I don’t have the exact explanation, but when João Félix hit the post, it’s because he thought there was a goalkeeper in front of him who would save it. We succeeded, but a significant part of that was due to Mike.”
France is set to face Spain in the semi-final of the tournament on Tuesday.
