England captain Harry Kane has described the experience of losing the Euro 2024 final to Spain as both tough and painful.
Substitute Mikel Oyarzabal scored a dramatic late winner, securing Spain's 2-1 victory over England in Sunday's Euro 2024 final and clinching the European Championship title.
England had managed to equalize in the 73rd minute through Cole Palmer, but their comeback was short-lived. Oyarzabal, the Real Sociedad forward, converted a cross in the 86th minute, earning Spain their record fourth European Championship crown.
At 30 years old, Kane is still in search of the first trophy of his goal-rich career.
Speaking after the match, Kane noted that his team struggled to maintain momentum after leveling the score.
“Losing in a final is as tough as it gets… We did really well to get back in the game at 1-1, but we couldn’t capitalize on our momentum… It’s as painful as it can be in a football match.”
Regarding the future of manager Gareth Southgate, who had hinted he might step down if England failed to win Euro 2024, Kane said, “Gareth will go away and take time to decide. We wanted to win it for him.”
