Boko Haram Plans to Infiltrate Nationwide Protest – Police |
The Yobe State Police Command has issued a warning about plans by Boko Haram insurgents to infiltrate an upcoming nationwide protest in the state.
According to DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, the Command's spokesperson, intelligence reports indicate that foreign mercenaries have been hired to cause destruction during the protest.
Abdulkarim urged those planning to participate in the protest to be cautious.
“As Yobe State continues its recovery from insurgency, Commissioner of Police CP Garba Ahmed recognizes the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful assembly.
“However, we must alert citizens to potential threats. Even peaceful protests at this time may be ill-advised.
“Recent insurgent activities in Gujba LGA, including an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion, have heightened concerns.
“We are not prepared to handle additional security challenges,” he said, warning that any criminals attempting to exploit the protest to destabilize the state would face severe consequences.
Abdulkarim emphasized that for a peaceful protest, organizers must provide details such as proposed routes, assembly points, expected duration, and contact information of leaders and organizers, along with measures to prevent criminal hijacking.
“By sharing this information, we can allocate adequate personnel and resources, designate specific routes and areas, establish clear communication channels, and minimize the risk of violence, property damage, or criminal activity.
“We urge protesters to cooperate with the Police, follow the law, and adhere to global best practices for peaceful assembly.
“We are committed to working with everyone to ensure peaceful expression and maintain public order.” (NAN)
