Bandits Kill Lecturer, Abduct Family in Katsina

In the early hours of today, Tuesday, a lecturer from the Federal University Dutsinma in Katsina State was killed, and his two sons were abducted by bandits. Two other individuals were also taken during the attack.

The lecturer, Dr. Tiri Gyang, was attacked around 1:30 am at his home in Yarima Low-Cost, Dutsinma Local Government Area of Katsina State.

A close family associate, who spoke to Vanguard under anonymity, revealed that the assailants gained entry into the compound by scaling the fence.

According to her, “Dr. Tiri’s two sons were in the living room when the incident occurred. The elder son saw the bandits entering through the fence and rushed to alert his father.

“The bandits eventually broke into Dr. Tiri’s apartment through the window in the girls’ room. The girls, upon hearing the commotion, ran to their mother’s room and hid in the bathroom with her.”

She further explained, “The bandits immediately captured Dr. Tiri’s younger son, who was in the living room with his elder brother, causing them to cry out.

“Dr. Tiri had no choice but to come out of hiding, pleading with the bandits to take him along with his sons. The bandits questioned why he hadn’t opened the door earlier, but he begged them to take him instead. Ultimately, they shot him and took his two sons away.

“Since it was the middle of the night, there was no one to rush him to the hospital. By the time help arrived, he had already passed away. His body has been taken to a mortuary in Katsina,” the source recounted.

Dr. Tiri was the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at FUDMA. He is survived by his wife and four children, two boys and two girls.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Armaya’u Bichi, confirmed the incident. He mentioned that the bandits also invaded the home of Mr. Adeola, abducting two of his sisters and stealing phones and money from some female staff residing in the compound.

ASP Abubakar Sadiq, spokesperson for the Katsina Police Command, also confirmed the attack. He stated, “The bandits attacked a compound behind Comprehensive Hospital in Dutsinma LGA, Katsina State, and attempted to kidnap 14 occupants. They shot and killed one resident in the process. Our officers responded and rescued 10 residents, but the bandits escaped with four others. Efforts are ongoing to rescue the remaining victims.”

Less than a month ago, a similar incident occurred at the university, where bandits abducted two staff members and the child of one victim from their homes in Dutsinma’s GRA.
