Last Sunday, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, led a large delegation of media and business professionals on a tour of the refinery.
The engineering marvel has garnered significant attention, with Eze Anaba, President of the Guild of Editors, describing it as 'monstrous.'
During the tour, I asked Dangote, "Must a refinery be this big?" He smiled and replied, "It's the biggest in the world. It's the first of its kind. The Dangote Petroleum Refinery Project is part of our initiatives to support the Federal Government's transformation agenda. Our goal is to produce within Nigeria most of the goods that were previously imported, despite having abundant resources for domestic manufacturing. We conceived Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals to address the perennial shortage of premium motor spirit (PMS) in the country."
Here are 25 facts about the Dangote Refinery:
1. The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals, a subsidiary of Dangote Industries Limited, is the world’s largest single-train petroleum refinery.
2. The refinery has a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) and includes an 838 KTPA polypropylene plant, covering approximately 2,635 hectares in the Dangote Industries Free Zone, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos.
3. It has a total storage capacity of 4.5 billion liters, sufficient for 20 days of crude requirement and 15 days of Nigeria’s gasoline consumption.
4. The refinery transforms crude oil into various petroleum products such as diesel, gasoline (petrol), jet fuel, and kerosene.
5. It produces Euro-V quality gasoline and diesel, as well as jet fuel and polypropylene.
6. The refinery is designed to process a wide variety of crudes, including many African, Middle Eastern, and US Light Tight Oil crudes.
7. It can meet 100% of Nigeria's requirements for all liquid products (Gasoline, Diesel, Kerosene & Aviation Jet) and has a surplus for export.
8. The refinery uses the latest technology to comply with stringent environmental guidelines and produce environmentally friendly petroleum products for global markets.
9. Its design conforms to World Bank, US EPA, EU, and Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) emission/effluent norms.

13. The Petrochemical Plant produces 77 different high-performance grades of polypropylene, a key raw material for many manufacturing and assembly plants.
14. The refinery maximizes gasoline production, which is in high demand, accounting for 53% of its production capacity compared to 22% of existing refineries in Nigeria.

22. The jetty is located 12.3 km from the refinery, reducing travel time.
