Manchester City is facing a dilemma as Erling Haaland's £175 million release clause becomes active. Haaland, who has enjoyed two successful seasons in the Premier League, winning back-to-back titles at the Etihad since his arrival from Borussia Dortmund in a £51 million deal in the summer of 2022, still has three years left on his contract.
However, the release clause allows Haaland to join any club outside England for the hefty sum of £175 million. This clause has now been triggered, and Haaland's buy-out fee will gradually decrease over the remaining three seasons of his contract.
As City grapples with Haaland's future, they are also preparing for the possibility of manager Pep Guardiola not signing a contract extension. Guardiola's current deal is set to expire next summer, potentially ending his trophy-laden nine-year reign at the club.
