Tinubu Pledges to Position Nigeria as Africa's Leader in Electric Vehicle Movement |
President Bola Tinubu, on a recent Friday in Abuja, revealed Nigeria's potential to become a leader in Africa within the electric vehicle movement globally.
At the inauguration of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Conversion, Filling, Reverse Engineering, and Training Centre in Utako, Abuja, the president expressed his government's commitment to exploring all energy alternatives for the Nigerian transportation sector.
The president, represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, emphasized Nigeria's rich lithium ore deposits, essential for manufacturing electric vehicles and batteries, stating, "Gas, along with electric vehicles, forms a significant component of our comprehensive strategy.
"I recognize NASENI's pioneering role in this area, with a bold vision to create and manufacture lithium batteries in Nigeria, in collaboration with international partners. We are determined to establish Nigeria as a central hub in Africa for the electric vehicle revolution.
Nigeria is fortunate to have a wealth of lithium ore deposits, crucial for electric vehicle and battery technology. Significant progress has been made towards fully realizing the Presidential Initiative on CNG, and today's event is proof of our successful endeavors."
President Tinubu also announced his government's goal to boost local production and cut down on imports, envisioning Nigeria as a powerhouse for industrial and manufacturing excellence on both the African continent and worldwide.
He expressed satisfaction with the advancements made under NASENI's new leadership.
"The progress we witness today reflects the original vision for NASENI, to establish an entity that significantly contributes to the daily lives of citizens and the Nigerian economy," he remarked.
Khalil Halilu, the CEO of NASENI, noted the strategic significance of the Utako facility's location, serving as a pivotal transportation link within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and beyond.
