| NAFDAC Destroys Fake Drugs, Expired Products Worth N985m In Kano |
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Thursday destroyed fake and expired goods valued at over N985 million in Kano.
NAFDAC’s Director General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, represented by the Director of the Northwest Zone, Mrs. Josephine Dayilim, emphasized the importance of removing Substandard and Falsified Medicines (SFs) from circulation.
She highlighted that a healthier population contributes positively to the economy, making Nigerians wealthier and improving the nation’s economic status.
She said the products destroyed include substandard, fake, and falsely labelled medicines, unwholesome food products, cosmetics, and other counterfeit items.
The products, she said, were seized from manufacturers, importers, and distributors, as well as expired drugs voluntarily handed over by compliant companies, NGOs, trade unions, the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Nigeria Customs Services (Kano/Jigawa, Kaduna, and Sokoto commands), and the National Association of Proprietary and Patent Medicine Dealers (NAPPMED).
Professor Adeyeye noted that Nigeria’s chaotic drug distribution system has been a significant challenge for regulatory agencies like NAFDAC.
In his welcome address, the State Coordinator, Alhaji Kassim Ibrahim, emphasized the significance of cleaning Kano of fake and counterfeit products.
He pointed out that Kano, being a center of commerce, plays a crucial role in the distribution of drugs within the Northern region.
By reducing the circulation of fake and counterfeit drugs in Kano, a substantial impact can be achieved in Northern Nigeria and beyond, he said.
