Minimum Wage Strike Continues, Affirms NLC |
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has reiterated that the ongoing nationwide indefinite strike will persist until its organs convene for a decision.
“Until we receive guidance from our organs during today's scheduled meeting on June 4th, we remain on strike,” stated the NLC in a post via X on Tuesday.
This statement comes after the Federal Government held a meeting with labor unions, including the Trade Union Congress (TUC), in an effort to resolve the strike.
Despite the closure of banks, schools, government offices, and other institutions, the Federal Government reached an agreement with organized labor on a new minimum wage that will exceed N60,000.
However, the statement from the meeting did not address the duration of the strike or the issue of electricity tariff hikes.
It read in part: “Following negotiations by the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage (NMW) and subsequent withdrawal of Labor from the negotiation, the Leadership of the National Assembly intervened on June 2, 2024. Organized Labor declared a nationwide strike on Monday, June 3, 2024, to press its demands.”
In the interest of the nation, the Federal Government convened a meeting with Labor on June 3rd in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, aiming to end the strike.
After extensive deliberations and engagement by both parties, the following resolutions were reached:
1. The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, is committed to a National Minimum Wage higher than N60,000.
2. As a result, the Tripartite Committee will meet daily for the next week to arrive at an agreeable National Minimum Wage.
3. In deference to the President's commitment, Organized Labor will immediately convene a meeting of its organs to consider this commitment.
4. No worker will face victimization due to the industrial action.
