Minimum Wage and Local Government Autonomy Are Key Topics at Governors' Meeting in Abuja |
The governors of the 36 states gathered in Abuja on Wednesday to deliberate on the critical issue of the national minimum wage.
The assembly also served to provide updates and discuss strategies regarding local government autonomy, which is currently a subject of legal proceedings.
In attendance were the NGF Deputy Chairman and Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde; Dauda Lawal of Zamfara; Charles Soludo of Anambra; Yahaya Inuwa of Gombe; Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina; Uba Sani of Kaduna; Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo; Mohammed Nasir Idris of Kebbi, among others.
Representing their governors at the meeting were the deputy governors from Borno and Akwa Ibom States.
The meeting's agenda was focused on discussing the Tripartite Committee's resolutions on National Minimum Wage to form a unified stance.
According to Daily Trust, the governors have opposed the N62,000 minimum wage suggested by the federal government, citing the financial strain it would impose on some states, potentially leading them to incur debts to fulfill salary obligations.
Conversely, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) are advocating for a N250,000 wage. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) postponed discussions on the minimum wage memo on Tuesday.
The governors' conference was reported to be in session at the time of the last press update.
