| Labour Holds Urgent Meeting Regarding FEC's Minimum Wage Memo Decision |
The organised labour, including the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, has scheduled an urgent meeting in light of the Federal Executive Council's decision to defer the memo concerning the minimum wage.
Set to take place at the Labour House at 10:00am on Wednesday, the meeting is called by a senior NLC official to deliberate on the FEC's action to postpone the minimum wage memo.
Earlier, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, reported that the Council addressed all but one of the 39 agenda items, the exception being the minimum wage memo.
Idris revealed the existence of a Tripartite committee report, involving local governments, states, NLC/TUC, and the federal government, which had been submitted along with a corresponding memo.
However, the minister stated that the Council deferred a decision on the matter due to its implications for various stakeholders, including Local Government, states, the Federal Government, the Organized Private Sector, and Labour unions.
As a result, the memo concerning the new minimum wage was postponed to allow President Bola Tinubu to conduct broader consultations before making a final presentation to the National Assembly.
An NLC representative, speaking to Daily Trust on Tuesday evening, indicated that the leadership of both labour organisations would convene and agree on a unified stance prior to any consultation with the President.
"We already have a stance, but we will convene tomorrow morning (Wednesday) to refine our position before the consultation. This is crucial for us," said the official, who remained unnamed due to lack of authorization to speak publicly.
Earlier in the month, members of the organised labour initiated an indefinite strike, lasting two days, which disrupted the nation's economic activities, to emphasize their demands regarding the minimum wage.
