JISEC Delays Jigawa LG Election |
The Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission (JISEC) has rescheduled the local government election from June 2024 to June 14, 2025.
During a stakeholders' meeting held on Wednesday, the Commission's Chairman, Auwal Muhammad Harbo, announced the postponement.
He explained that the rescheduling was necessitated by the Jigawa State House of Assembly's revision of the 2012 Jigawa electoral law, aligning it with the 2022 Electoral Act, which allows 360 days for political parties' preparation.
"The increased requests from political parties to delay the election led the commission to propose an amendment to the 2012 Electoral Law to the Jigawa State Assembly, aligning with the 2022 Electoral Act's provision of 360 days for preparation, compared to the previous 90 days," he stated.
The current local government chairmen's term is set to end in June 2024.
Under the revised law, the state government is permitted to appoint interim chairmen until June 2025.
Adamu Isah Indallahi, Secretary of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, remarked that this change grants the opposition parties ample time to gear up and compete in the elections.
