Hajj: 7 Nigerians Arrested for Lacking ID Cards

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has reported the arrest of seven Nigerians who were not in possession of their NUSUK identity cards.

The NUSUK card was introduced by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to identify legal pilgrims participating in the 2024 hajj pilgrimage. This measure aims to prevent a recurrence of last year’s situation, where illegal pilgrims overwhelmed the Mina camps, resulting in some Nigerians being denied access to services they had paid for.

A circular issued to States’ Muslim Pilgrims’ and Welfare Boards (SMPWB’s) by NAHCON’s Coordinator in Makkah, Dr. Aliyu Tanko, dated June 6, highlighted the recent arrests. The circular emphasized the importance of adhering to the advisory and appeal regarding the collection and use of Nusuk ID Cards during Hajj in Saudi Arabia.

The Commission warned that seven Nigerian pilgrims from two states were already arrested on June 5th and 6th for not having their Nusuk ID cards. As the month of Dhul Hijjah approaches, authorities will intensify efforts to apprehend individuals without these cards.

Dr. Aliyu Tanko urged all SMPWB’s and tour operator companies to raise awareness among their pilgrims about the mandatory possession of Nusuk ID Cards. These cards must be collected upon arrival in Makkah from the Mutawwif officials.

He emphasized that carrying these cards at all times is essential, as they serve as the recognized means of identifying pilgrims and granting access to key areas during Hajj. Pilgrims with smartphones can download the NUSUK app from Playstore or iTunes stores, using their passport and visa numbers to activate and access digital copies of their NUSUK cards.

Failure to possess Hajj permits or aiding those without them can result in a SR10,000 fine, six months’ imprisonment, deportation, and a ten-year ban from Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Aliyu Tanko urged SMPWB’s and tour operators to ensure strict adherence to these guidelines to avoid inconvenience or disruptions during pilgrims’ spiritual journey.
