Gov Yusuf Sanctions N5bn Fertiliser Acquisition for Kano Farmers

The Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, has sanctioned the procurement of fertilisers valued at over N5 billion to enhance food security within the state.

The governor's aide, Sanusi Bature, announced this in a statement to the press in Kano yesterday, noting that the sanction was given during the 15th State Executive Council (SEC) meeting. The move is in line with the commitments made during the 2023 election campaign.

Governor Yusuf stated that the fertiliser procurement aims to bolster smallholder farmers, particularly in the rural sectors, to achieve higher crop yields in the 2024 rainy season.

"The Kano State Executive Council has earmarked a significant sum of N5,073,840,000 for the purchase of fertiliser throughout the 44 Local Government areas of the state.

This step was among the decisions made at the council meeting presided over by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf last Saturday," the statement detailed.

"Concerned about the soaring prices of food, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had earlier acquired and distributed grains worth billions of naira to the state's vulnerable populace to alleviate the widespread economic strain.

The newly approved fertiliser is intended to augment the supply from the state-run Kano Agricultural Supply Company (KASCO) and will be offered to the farmers at a reduced rate across the state," he explained.
