FG Prohibits Hotel Accommodation for Minor Girls |
The Federal Government, through the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has declared a prohibition on the accommodation of minor girls in hotels nationwide.
Addressing the audience in Abuja on Saturday at the award and graduation event for the 'Unlock training programme' participants, organized by the President's Senior Special Assistant on Technical, Vocational, and Entrepreneurship Education, Madam Abiola Arogundade, the minister announced that the prohibition will commence on June 20, 2024.
Minister Uju also cautioned hospitals against turning away emergency cases within their capacity, emphasizing the government's commitment to tackling these challenges.
She stated, "To the beneficiaries present today, I trust you've seen the circulating video concerning our girls taken to Ghana. Our response will be disclosed on Monday.
"Starting the 20th, no hotel shall accommodate underage girls. This is a firm stance. No more accommodation of minor girls; no more intimidation.
"Furthermore, hospitals must not refuse emergency cases. We are confronting these critical issues head-on. Should any hospital do so, I will appeal to all Nigerians, whom I commend for their active use of social media to address concerns.
"Now is the moment for decisive action; we must all be prepared. If a hospital rejects an emergency case, I urge all Nigerians to join the cause. This battle is for everyone, not just one individual."
During the ceremony, 120 participants who presented the top business plans were awarded certificates and a N500,000 grant each.
Madam Abiola Arogundade, the President's Senior Special Assistant on Technical, Vocational, and Entrepreneurship Education, explained that the initiative aims to enhance their economic development potential.
According to Daily Trust on Sunday, the event was attended by various dignitaries, including ministers, House of Representatives members, and presidential special advisers.
