Enhanced Security at Mini Palace as Police Displace Hunters Guarding Sanusi |
Local hunters and vigilante groups previously safeguarding the Kano Emir's palace (Gidan Rumfa) have vacated the premises, with state police operatives now assuming full control of the palace's security.
The Daily Trust reported that these local hunters and vigilantes had been tasked with protecting Gidan Rumfa following the appointment of Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano.
A Monday morning inspection by a Daily Trust correspondent revealed the absence of the aforementioned security personnel.
Police vehicles were observed stationed throughout the palace grounds.
The Daily Trust also noted that Sanusi's hurried return to Gidan Rumfa was prompted by urgent intelligence regarding the intentions of the ousted 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, to reclaim the palace.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, accompanied by several officials, expedited Sanusi's entry into the palace around 2 am to thwart Bayero's potential return.
Nonetheless, Bayero proceeded to the Nassarawa mini palace, where he continues to reside and perform traditional ceremonies.
While Bayero receives protection from official security forces, including the police, military, and Civil Defense, Sanusi had been under the watch of local hunters and vigilantes, who were convened from the state's 44 Local Government Areas.
In related news, the state's Police Commissioner, Mohammed Usaini Gumel, has been promoted to Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), and a successor has been appointed for the state.
The incoming Commissioner of Police is scheduled to formally assume duties on Monday, with preparations for the official handover already underway.
