ASUU Claims NUC Oversteps in Curriculum Development |
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has charged the National Universities Commission (NUC) with overstepping its bounds, taking over the curriculum development role from university senates and departments.
This claim was made in a statement during a press conference and rally by ASUU at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture (MOUAU).
The event featured Professor Michael Ugwuene and Efe Osodeke, the MOUAU ASUU branch chairman and secretary, who stated that the NUC, with federal government support, intends to supply 70% of the Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standard, leaving only 30% to the university Senates.
ASUU labeled this move as perilous and inadmissible, emphasizing that the NUC's imposition of Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standard (CCMAS), where it dictates 70% of the content, undermines the university senates' statutory role in academic programming, which is limited to 30%.
ASUU warned that if unchecked, the NUC's overreach could further degrade higher education in Nigeria.
The union also decried the growing number of private universities, citing a negative impact on educational quality.
ASUU reiterated its opposition to the Integrated Personal and Payroll Information System (IPPS), alleging it targets ASUU members unfairly.
The union urged the federal government to fulfill its agreements with ASUU promptly, address the inadequate salaries of university lecturers, and cease politicizing the Earned Academic Allowance, among other issues.
ASUU warned of "serious consequences" for the nation's academic sector if the government fails to meet their demands.
