| Abia State Imposes Curfew on Tricycles and Motorcycles in Aba, Umuahia |
The government of Abia State has declared a curfew on the operations of tricycles and motorcycles, effective from 7 pm to 6 am daily in the cities of Aba and Umuahia starting July 1, 2024.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Uzor Nwachukwu, during a press briefing in his office following a meeting with key players in the state's transportation sector.
The commissioner emphasized that the curfew is aimed at protecting the lives and properties of the state's law-abiding citizens and residents. He cited recent security concerns involving tricycles, such as theft and robbery, as the impetus for implementing these necessary security precautions.
"The state government is taking measures to limit the activities of criminals who utilize these modes of transportation for their illicit deeds," Nwachukwu remarked.
He also disclosed the formation of a committee, chaired by the Governor's Special Adviser on Security, Navy Commander MacDonald Ubah (retd), along with other state officials, to oversee the mandatory registration of all tricycles, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles.
The purpose of this registration is to accurately identify the legitimate owners or operators for security reasons.
Nwachukwu added that the government would consider revising the curfew if needed in the future.
Representatives from various unions present at the meeting expressed their support for the government's decision regarding the operational hours restriction.
