President Bola Tinubu has issued a stern warning to terrorist factions targeting the armed forces, affirming Nigeria's capability to address such threats.
In response to the recent assault that resulted in the death of soldiers in Aba, Abia State, the president expressed his sorrow, noting that this event occurred merely two months following a comparable attack in Okuama, Delta State.
He cautioned the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who were observing Biafra Day during the assault, that his administration would not remain passive in the face of treasonous acts.
"It is with great sorrow that I've learned of another tragic event—the killing of five soldiers by alleged militants of the banned terrorist group, IPOB. These peacekeepers were stationed in Aba, Abia State, when they were fatally attacked last Thursday, a mere two months after the distressing occurrence in Okuama, Delta State."
Such unjustifiable, cruel, and malevolent deeds are utterly reprehensible and must not be accepted or tolerated within our nation.
"Our military and police personnel bear the significant responsibility of shielding us from aggressors and non-state entities. Numerous have sacrificed their lives in service, and others have endured the humiliation of mistreatment by those they are sworn to protect.
They certainly do not merit the senseless assaults by disorderly individuals within our society. The federal government will decisively act against those persistently assaulting our armed forces' officers and personnel. Under no circumstances should anyone dare to take the lives of state representatives.
"I wish to emphasize that the Federal Republic of Nigeria's government, along with our armed forces, possess the strength to subdue violent non-state groups that jeopardize the safety of our communities.
I call upon our security agencies to not only apprehend the orchestrators and culprits of the Aba assault but also those inciting people to observe stay-at-home orders. Such conduct constitutes a treasonable felony.
The restraint shown by our security forces should not be misconstrued as a sign of frailty. We are committed to fostering a peaceful and cohesive society, yet let there be no misapprehension that the government will respond fittingly to any threat against the lives of our servicemen and women. My heartfelt sympathies are with the families of the five deceased soldiers, their comrades, and the leadership of our armed forces. I also encourage our peacekeeping personnel not to lose heart due to the regrettable episode in Aba."
