Why Nigeria Continues to Battle Malaria: Challenges and Solutions

Despite significant investments in the fight against malaria, Nigeria still struggles with this endemic disease, accounting for 26.6% of malaria cases and 31.3% of malaria-related deaths globally in 2021. Stakeholders at a medical outreach program commemorating 2024 World Malaria Day identified poverty, environmental factors, and lack of awareness as major challenges hindering progress.

Poverty and Environmental Factors

Omolola Lana, Executive Director of Westfield Development Initiative, highlighted that many Nigerians live in environmentally unsafe areas, breeding grounds for mosquitoes. She emphasized the need for education on keeping environments clean and storing water properly.

Lack of Awareness and Use of Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs)

Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic

Medical Outreach Program

Westfield Development Initiative, in partnership with Diya Fatimilehin and Co and Itire-Ikate Local Council Development Area (LCDA), organized a medical outreach program, distributing 500 LLINs to families in the community. The program aimed to raise awareness and provide resources to combat malaria.

Community Response

Residents of Itire-Ikate community appreciated the initiative, acknowledging the high prevalence of malaria and the need for treated nets to prevent incidents.

Way Forward

To win the war against malaria, Nigeria must address poverty, environmental factors, and lack of awareness. Renewed efforts, government-led awareness campaigns, and distribution of LLINs are crucial steps towards reducing malaria cases and deaths.
