Director of Communications, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ademola Olajire, has disclosed the reasons behind the soccer house’s decision to name Finidi George as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.
Finidi’s appointment was ratified last week by the NFF.
The 53-year-old was chosen over other prominent coaches, both local and international, who vied for the position.
The ex-international previously served as an assistant to Jose Peseiro, the former manager of the team.
Finidi assumed interim leadership for the friendlies against Ghana and Mali in March.
Olajire remarked that his notable track record and tenure with Peseiro distinguished him as the prime candidate for the role.
“I’m not on the Technical Committee, but I can point out many positives about Finidi George,” Olajire stated to Hotsports.
He elaborated: “Finidi George wasn’t just an exceptional footballer; he has also thoroughly prepared himself and has only enhanced his reputation with the achievements he’s garnered in his brief coaching career. He could have stayed in Spain to take a role with a second-division team, but he opted to return to Nigeria and begin with an NPFL club.
“He commenced with Enyimba. By his second season, he clinched the league championship. Winning the league title is no small task, and he deserves commendation for that. Currently, in his third season and with four games remaining, he’s poised to retain the championship. That’s a significant accomplishment and indicates he’s quite adept at coaching.
“Regarding the Super Eagles, his twenty-month stint as an assistant to Jose Peseiro provides him an advantage over others. He was integral to the team during their AFCON qualification and their runner-up finish at the tournament.
“Given someone of his caliber, with such achievements and close association with the team, it’s logical he was chosen, especially since we’re just five weeks away from crucial matches.”
Finidi’s inaugural task as the official head coach of the Super Eagles will be the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin in June.
To date, the Super Eagles haven't secured a victory in the qualifying rounds, having drawn their initial two matches against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
