According to a statement from Lt.-Col. Musa Yahaya, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 1 Division Nigerian Army, the troops encountered the terrorists during an aggressive patrol and engaged them in intense gun battles.

The statement noted that five terrorists and violent extremists were eliminated during the confrontation in Udawa.

Yahaya enumerated the items seized during the encounter as one pump action gun, six cartridges, one empty AK 47 rifle magazine, one MP3 radio, one phone battery, two Baofeng radios, two chargers for Baofeng radios, four memory cards, two SIM cards, and four charms.

Additionally, he revealed that troops stationed at Sabo Birni in the Igabi local government area of Kaduna State intercepted suspected terrorist movements in the Baka area on May 19, 2024.

The soldiers quickly deployed to the location and engaged the terrorists.

"The ensuing firefight saw the terrorists, unable to withstand the superior firepower of the troops, flee in disarray to nearby hills with various gunshot wounds.

The soldiers scoured the area and seized one AK 47 rifle and two motorcycles, with bloodstains evident throughout the incident site," Yahaya stated.

In a similar vein, soldiers lying in ambush at Kwaga village in the Birnin Gwari local government area also encountered terrorist elements and neutralized two of the offenders.

The items recovered from the culprits included two AK 47 rifles, two magazines, and two motorcycles.

In the meantime, Maj.-Gen. MLD Saraso, the General Officer Commanding the 1 Division Nigerian Army and Commander of Operation WHIRL PUNCH, praised the troops for their assertive stance and urged them to maintain the momentum and render life intolerable for terrorists, insurgents, violent extremists, and their associates.

Maj.-Gen. Saraso also called on all law-abiding citizens to report individuals with gunshot wounds seeking medical assistance to the Nigerian Army or the nearest security agencies.

He further implored the residents of Kaduna and Niger States to provide the Nigerian Army and other security agencies with prompt and actionable intelligence for immediate action.
