Today marks the 14th anniversary of the passing of former Nigerian President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua

Prior to his presidency, Yar’Adua was the governor of Katsina State from 1999 to 2007, where he was recognized for implementing significant projects and revitalizing the civil service.

Born on the 16th of August, 1951, he passed away on the 5th of May, 2010, at the age of 58. Had he lived, he would be celebrating his 73rd birthday this year.

Yar’Adua was officially announced as the winner of the presidential election on April 21, 2007, and he served as the nation’s president for three years.

Even years after his demise, his relatives, friends, political colleagues, and numerous Nigerians fondly remember him.

Individuals who spoke with Daily Trust shared memories of his character and leadership style, urging current leaders to adopt similar virtues for Nigeria’s progress.

Basic Integrity, Umaru’s Hallmark – Cousin

Engr. Abu Aminu Yar’Adua, his cousin and childhood friend, highlighted basic integrity as the late President Yar’Adua’s hallmark trait.

“We are first cousins. His father, the late Matawalli Musa, and my father, the late Aminu, were full siblings,” he explained.

"My father played a significant role in raising late Musa Yar’adua, being his older brother. Umar and I were close in age, and within the family, we were always grouped together.

“From childhood to our adult years, Umaru exhibited natural leadership qualities. He possessed a profound sense of humanity and modesty. He approached every task with exceptional focus, carrying it out with diligence, commitment, and integrity; and it was this fundamental integrity that distinguished him,” he stated.

He mentioned that Umaru co-founded the Katsina Students and Old Boys Association, an early provincial organization that, although short-lived, was later revitalized by Yar’Adua and became a stepping stone for his political career.

He also noted that the positive demeanor shown by late Umaru and others in the family was a result of their upbringing.

Why Today’s Leaders Struggle to Emulate Yar’Adua – Dr. Mustapha Inuwa

Dr. Mustapha Muhammad Inuwa, who held various positions under late President Yar’Adua’s administration when he was governor, described him as unparalleled.

“It’s challenging because to fill late Umaru Yar’Adua’s shoes, leaders must be entirely non-materialistic, altruistic, frugal, and incorruptible,” said Dr. Inuwa, who also served as SSG under Governor Aminu Bello Masari.

He pointed out that these are traits rarely found combined in one person.

“Umaru never focused on accumulating wealth, which starkly contrasts with today’s leadership. You can only emulate him if you possess these personal characteristics. But if you’re seeking wealth, property, travel, and luxury, you can’t mirror Umaru,” he added.

Dr. Inuwa described Yar’Adua as candid and direct in governance matters.

"Yar’Adua was a visionary leader, always contemplating the best course of action and how to achieve success, even if it meant collaborating with political rivals. He prioritized capability over politics.

"He was a leader who commanded respect; he had self-respect and respected others. He was a leader who truly led. He could listen attentively and value different viewpoints, even if they diverged from his own. He was open to and respected superior arguments on any issue. I can recall numerous instances, in both politics and governance, where this was evident.

"Late President Yar’Adua was incorruptible. I can’t recall a single instance where he acted for personal gain. As the education minister, we awarded many contracts, but none were for personal or individual benefit.

“He never instructed me towards dishonesty. He was a stickler for due process and regulations, ensuring all actions were above board. He was an honest man, and I believe Nigeria lost a leader who could have greatly improved the country,” he said.

When asked about Nigeria’s potential trajectory had Yar’Adua lived and served two terms, he responded, “Nigeria would have been a completely different place.”

He continued, "Another aspect of Yar’Adua’s leadership was his knack for recognizing capable individuals and providing them with the necessary support to fulfill their duties.

"He was also a leader with foresight. He initiated projects that would benefit people in the long run, making decisions that, while sometimes unpopular at the moment, were ultimately recognized as beneficial.

"Financially, when he assumed office in 1999, Katsina State’s coffers were nearly empty. The state was in debt, and gratuities were unpaid. However, Yar’Adua didn’t rush into new contracts. Instead, he focused on generating funds to clear existing debts and then on funding projects.

“For example, when I departed the education ministry, my successor inherited a bank balance of N1.7 billion. We owed no contractors and had not borrowed any funds. Banks were even approaching us for deposits. This demonstrates Umaru’s prudence. If his successors had built upon his foundation, Katsina would be in a much better state today,” he said.

Yar’Adua’s Legacy and Lessons – Dr. Muttaqha Darma

In his book ‘What Yar’Adua Told and Taught Me’, launched today in memory of the late president’s 14th death anniversary, Dr. Muttaqha Rabe Darma portrayed Yar’Adua as a leader with a grounded and compassionate approach, always prioritizing the people’s welfare.

He recounted his 23-year relationship with Yar’Adua, which began during his student days: “As a young, idealistic academic, I was captivated by Yar’Adua’s serenity and assurance. His speeches, unlike the typical political discourse of the time, centered on ethical governance and serving the populace rather than making hollow promises.”

Dr. Darma commemorated Yar’Adua as a progressive leader whose principles and actions significantly shaped the nation, highlighting his dedication to ethical leadership, transparency, and accountability in governance.

He discussed Yar’Adua’s efforts to enhance agriculture, education, and economic growth, his battle against corruption, and his push for clean governance, all of which continue to inspire future generations of leaders.

His Presidential Journey
