Tinubu Urges Senegal's Faye to Foster ECOWAS Unity

In a discussion with President Faye at the State House, President Tinubu highlighted the necessity for West African nations to collaborate in overcoming the multifaceted challenges of terrorism, banditry, human trafficking, and poverty.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Thursday, welcomed President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal, urging for a united front in West Africa to tackle the region's pressing issues effectively.

In a discussion with President Faye at the State House, President Tinubu highlighted the necessity for West African nations to collaborate in overcoming the multifaceted challenges of terrorism, banditry, human trafficking, and poverty.

He emphasized the importance of centering governance around the populace, remarking that democracy's core is undermined when citizens are not prioritized.

President Tinubu stressed the sanctity of democratic governance, democratic principles, and constitutional order, which must be upheld.

He further asserted the need for adherence to and respect for key institutions and principles, such as the judiciary and the rule of law, to maintain democracy.

Tinubu requested President Faye to encourage Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to rejoin the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

On January 28, the military governments of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger declared their departure from ECOWAS.

These nations had been previously suspended after military coups ousted their elected civilian administrations.

Subsequently, ECOWAS removed the sanctions imposed on Niger, Mali, Burkina-Faso, and Guinea.

"I am heartened by your steadfastness, patience, and dedication to democratic ideals," Tinubu expressed.

"To truly commit to democracy, we must ensure our people are at its heart. We share your conviction in Africa's sovereignty. Yet, how can we serve our people and center our democracy around them if we disregard the rule of law and endorse unconstitutional government changes?

As ECOWAS Chairman, I invite you to engage with our counterparts and urge their return to our community," Tinubu proposed.

Responding, President Faye recognized the longstanding shared values, aspirations, and challenges between Nigeria and Senegal, noting the historical bond since the 1960s.

President Faye proposed reactivating the Nigeria-Senegal joint commission to fortify bilateral ties in diplomacy, commerce, and other areas.

Addressing ECOWAS, President Faye expressed confidence that under President Tinubu's guidance and expertise, the relationships between member states would be reinforced, promoting the community's progress.
