Tinubu Urges Governors: Dedicate Yourselves to Your Constituents

President Bola Tinubu has expressed concern over the significant poverty and lack of infrastructure in the North, declaring the situation as unacceptable.

Additionally, Tinubu, who is troubled by the high number of children not attending school, urged national elders and leaders to encourage State Governors to remain within their jurisdictions and serve their constituents, particularly in rural communities.

These comments were made by the president during a Thursday meeting with the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) leadership at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

He also called on state governments to focus on the welfare of local communities, emphasizing the need for accountability and efficiency in local government administration.

President Tinubu warned that any appointees not meeting expectations would be dismissed.

"I urge you to engage with the governors. I am fully committed to improving the country's revenue. They must show empathy and promptly address the needs of local residents.

"People live and work in these local communities; they farm and build their lives there. If local governments fail to provide services effectively, we, as leaders, cannot merely rely on statistics.

Perhaps it's time to reassess. What worked four years ago may no longer be suitable. We seek votes from local communities; once we receive them, our focus shifts to Abuja," said the president.

Addressing the critical role of education in nation-building, President Tinubu found the number of out-of-school children in certain regions of Nigeria to be unacceptable.

"The issue of children not attending school cannot continue. Education combats poverty, which has brought many of us to where we are today. We must utilize our education to serve the populace and enhance their living conditions. Strengthening Nigeria's educational system is essential to our economy's backbone. We will work closely with you on this matter.

We are still in the process of building Nigeria, and I appreciate your emphasis on the need for development. The deterioration of infrastructure and the extent of poverty in the North are dire issues that we must resolve," President Tinubu stated.

On the topic of security, the president praised National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu for his dedication, stating: "Everyone desires safety, and we must invest further in technology. I assure you, we will take action. We are determined to ensure Nigeria's security and the protection of its citizens."

President Tinubu also discussed economic growth and the management of livestock, noting: "The challenges with animal husbandry have significantly impacted Nigeria. Developing dairy farms can substantially boost our economy.

"Engage with the governors and encourage them to allocate more land. Urge herders to work in partnership with state authorities. The states possess the land. We are prepared to allocate funds to assist herders. We are capable of achieving this, and if countries like Brazil and the Netherlands can do it, so can we," the president affirmed.

President Tinubu also seized the opportunity to call for national unity and ongoing support for his administration, stating, "Unity is our strength in diversity. Our population's size and diversity present us with strength and opportunities. I am grateful to the cabinet members for their hard work, but I will not hesitate to relieve any of them from their duties if they fail to serve Nigerians," the president declared.

President Tinubu instructed the formation of a committee to monitor the issues discussed at the meeting and appointed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, to oversee the follow-up actions.

Barrister Bashir Dalhatu, the delegation leader and Chairman of the ACF Board of Trustees, congratulated President Tinubu on completing his first year in office and acknowledged his contributions and service to the nation.

He highlighted that President Tinubu's commitments and promises to the Northerners during the electoral campaign were pivotal.

Barrister Dalhatu emphasized the deep trust and confidence that Northern Nigeria has in President Tinubu, remarking, "Your unwavering support and collaboration with Northerners, which has previously aided many in securing electoral victories, including the presidency, has solidified your esteem and trust among Northerners, as evidenced by the voting patterns in the recent presidential election."
