Tinubu Appoints Yayale Ahmed, Isa Yuguda, and Jega to Varsities' Governing Councils

These appointees will act as Pro-chancellors/Chairmen and members of the Governing Boards for the 111 federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has named former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, ex-Bauchi Governor, Alhaji Isa Yuguda, and ex-INEC Chairman, Prof Attahiru Jega, among others, to the newly announced federal universities’ Governing Councils.

The roster also includes Alhaji Muhammad Abacha, son of the late Head of State Sani Abacha; Sen. Udoma Udo Udoma; Prof. Munzali Jibril; Chief Wole Olanipekun SAN; Sen Joy Emordi, and Prof Julius Okojie, among others.

Each of the 50 universities, 37 polytechnics, and 24 colleges of education has five appointees on the list.

These appointees will act as Pro-chancellors/Chairmen and members of the Governing Boards for the 111 federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

This information was published in an advertorial by the Federal Ministry of Education in a national daily, signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack.

The advertorial states that the Governing Councils' inauguration and retreat are scheduled for Thursday, May 30, and Friday, May 31, 2024, at the National Universities Commission, 26 Aguiyi Ironsi Street, Maitama, Abuja, starting at 9 am on both days.

These appointments follow threats from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to strike due to the Federal Government's delay in appointing Governing Councils for federal universities, a year after dissolving the previous ones.

ASUU criticized the operation of universities without councils, which are essential for overseeing university activities and finances.

The source emphasized that a college cannot have both a Provost and a Vice Chancellor, and only the federal government can determine their university status.
