The long-awaited return of Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II to the esteemed throne of his ancestors, after a four-year absence, was highly anticipated. The early-year petitions by unnamed groups to the Kano State House of Assembly, seeking a revision of the Kano Emirate Council Law 2019, foreshadowed a larger scheme. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's enactment of the New Kano Emirate Repeal Law 2024 reinstates the former emir and dissolves the five new emirate councils established by Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. Consequently, Kano unifies under a single emirate council.
Whether seen as divine intervention or destiny, a fresh era has begun. The unfolding saga within the Kano Emirate Council, marked by political intrigue and drama, captivates many. The ousting of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi by ex-governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje was perceived by numerous Nigerians as an unjust attack on the traditional institution. His dethronement, mirroring the allegations faced by his grandfather, was deemed a politically charged act of retribution by Ganduje, disrupting the harmony within the Kano royal family and tarnishing the dignity of the throne.
Despite this, Sanusi's supporters maintained faith in his eventual reinstatement. The popular Hausa saying "naka sai naka" reflects the belief that when providence favors a person, no one can oppose it.
Change remains life's sole constant. While destiny can be redirected, it cannot be completely suppressed. Sanusi has weathered numerous battles, with victories and defeats alike. He has consistently carried himself with the dignity of a reigning monarch. Notably, a high-ranking Kaduna official was dismissed for referring to him as the 'former emir' during an official event.
The election victory of Abba Kabir Yusuf in 2023 signaled impending changes. Early in his term, Rabiu Kwankwaso hinted at a return to the original emirate structure. Kwankwaso's words often reflect the governor's sentiments, which are typically endorsed by the governor himself.
Aminu Ado Bayero faced slim chances of retaining the crown post-Ganduje. The situation gravitated towards the current reality, which Bayero likely foresaw.
Governor's spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, quoted the governor saying, "Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II's return to the throne will foster peace and prosperity," and that "the repeal of the council law fulfills the governor's electoral promise to revive the state's historic grandeur."
The loss of the throne is not the world's end. Aminu Bayero, entangled in Kano's political web, is recognized for his humility and apolitical stance as emir. His respectful treatment of his nephew, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, is commendable.
Sanusi Lamido Sanusi deserves praise for his detachment from emirate affairs since his exile to Loko in Nasarawa State, contributing to peace in Kano. The conflict was not between the royal siblings, who share mutual respect, but between Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and his former ally, Musa Rabiu Kwankwaso. Governor Abba Yusuf acted as a conduit for Kwankwaso's intentions.
Sanusi's outspokenness led Ganduje to attempt to diminish his influence, a move that backfired.
The 2023 elections shattered Ganduje's expectations, as his chosen successor lost. Before becoming the 14th Emir of Kano, Sanusi was suspended as Central Bank of Nigeria governor by Goodluck Jonathan, who favored Aminu Bayero for the throne. However, Kwankwaso's maneuvers ensured Sanusi's ascension.
Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, a distinguished economist and intellectual, is better suited for academia, where he can share his knowledge. Kano's citizens must navigate this transition with care to prevent unrest. Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, as a devout Muslim, understands that power is divinely bestowed. His dethronement was not due to personal misconduct but political rivalry.
The royal family possesses traditional means for resolving such issues, which should be promptly employed to ease tensions. The restored emir must be cautious in his conduct, remembering that familial harmony is paramount. Sanusi should also consider his relationship with Aminu's sister, Hajia Sadiya, his first wife. Ultimately, the royal family benefits from unity, as familial bonds are profound.
